    • Soo Lock – Phase 3 New Third Lock Foundation Verification Drilling, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan: 7NT is excited to work with GEI, KAT and USACE on this project. This ongoing project is to make improvements to the northern approach channel and construction of the New Lock, 100-feet by 1,200 feet, at the Soo. Work consists of deepening the upstream approach for modern vessels, rehabilitating the upstream approach walls, demolishing the existing lock and constructing the New Lock. 7NT has provided drilling services for Foundation Verification and Instrumentation.  The Foundation Verification scope included 150 borings that extended 20-70 feet into bedrock.  Bedrock coring was completed with PQ3 wireline.  Overburden consisted of 10-50 feet of granite cobbles and boulders. Every critical path deadline was met. Several borings were completed from a barge in the St. Mary’s River. The instrumentation consisted of drilling and installing inclinometers and standpipe piezometers to depths of 40-125 feet below ground surface. Instrumentation was completed along lock walls and in concrete and sand filled coffer cells.  A total of 60 instruments were drilled and installed – all on schedule to allow for lock dewatering.
